Writing is a life long journy

How can I help?

Working with me, you’ll learn writing techniques and tools that will carry you through college and beyond. And believe it or not, you’ll have fun. How often in life have you been given the chance to pause and think about yourself as a character in this larger story that is your life? And of course, at the end of this there is this amazing thing: your future!

My students have been accepted to NYU, Cornell, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, USC Film School, UCLA, University of Washington, Penn State, Cal Poly, University of Oregon, Puget Sound University, University of Hawaii, Occidental College and many other colleges and universities.

Maybe you have an idea for a project and you aren't sure how to get started. Maybe you've hit a roadblock and aren't sure where to take your project next.

Or maybe you've just always wanted to write or improve your skills but aren’t sure where to begin.

I can help you to start, finish and revise your drafts, strengthen your skills and learn elements of craft, find new ways to tell a story, and to develop faith in your own voice and process so that writer’s block no longer exists.

Do you have a draft that you aren't sure where to take next? You know it isn't finished, but you aren't sure how to start again.  Maybe you feel daunted, afraid of "getting it wrong."  Or maybe you just need inspiration, perspective, a little clarity.

What I do is to help you to see the through-line in your work, the energy and impulses that drive it and move it forward and keep it moving and that hold a reader’s interest.  And once I see this, I identify where that through-line, where those energies are blocked and suggest changes that will propel the work forward.

Aurora teaches in a way that is supportive and empowering. She created an environment that offered me the freedom to explore writing and creativity in a new way. I was able to set aside expectations and doubts and to once again enjoy the process of writing

College Application Essays

Increasingly, as colleges move away from requiring test scores for admission, they are interested in what they are calling character

Your application is largely a set of facts, data points aggregated into a chart that help readers to rank you. Letters of recommendation humanize these data points, showing how others see you and what your contributions are to a classroom and campus. But personal essays and short answers are the only chance readers have to hear in your own words how you think, how you see yourself, and – really – who you are.

So that can feel like a lot of pressure! How are you supposed to even know who you are? (As one of my students said: Isn’t that why I’m going to college?)

In my experience, applicants take one of two paths in crafting their personal statements:

1. Procrastinate because of the pressure and write essays that stay on the surface and rely on cliches.   Or….

2. Try so hard to stand out that they write stiff or overly-performative essays.

In both cases, applicants miss the mark. What really captures an audience is authenticity – a sense of your character shining through. But to write something authentic is not easy.  You have to address the requirements of the prompt, to be direct, clear and professional, and simultaneously, you need to be able to be comfortable in your writing and open to creativity.  All of this is needed to articulate this hard to pin down, but vital (and probably cool) thing we call “you.”

This is why working with a coach is helpful and why the process takes so long.  This is also why I only work with a handful of students every application season.

What I do is help you to get to know, and to be able to articulate: you.

The Process …

In the discovery phase, I guide you through a series of writing exercises and we talk: exploring the stories, themes, images and questions that make up your life. As you plan, draft and revise, I help you to get comfortable with the writing process so that instead of feeling the pressure to perform you feel curious, open and empowered.

I'll never forget the day I got my acceptance letter from UCLA. I was surrounded by friends who had just found out that they did not get in and I figured it was unlikely that I would be the exception. Now, looking back, I frequently credit Aurora for the admission into my dream school. Completing college applications was extremely stressful, and I felt overwhelmed until I met Aurora. Thank you again, Aurora, for being a great listener and for helping me craft the perfect personal statement!

Professional & Creative Writing

I believe that writing is a collaborative process and that the old model of the solitary (often tortured) writer is harmful. The stories that I'm most proud of were inspired by conversations that I had with friends or colleagues. When I'm stuck with a draft, I send it to someone for feedback or take it to a workshop. I do not know any writer who works in isolation.  And we don't only collaborate with colleagues, we also collaborate with teachers and mentors, friends, editors and publishers.

A writing coach is a collaborator –  guiding you to commit to your writing and giving you the tools you need to keep going.

Maybe you have a deadline you need to meet or an amazing idea for a project and you aren't sure how to get started.  Maybe you've written a draft or partial draft of something and now you're stuck. Or you’re just stuck in general.  You used to love writing, but life intervened and now you can't seem to find a way back into it. Or maybe you've just always wanted to write, or to improve your skills but weren’t sure where to begin.

I can help you:

To map a path forward

To start, finish and revise your drafts

To play, surprise yourself, and find new ways to tell a story

To strengthen your skills and learn elements of craft

To see your work clearly

And to develop faith in your own voice and process so that writer’s block no longer exists.

I work with creative writers of fiction, memoir and nonfiction as well as creatives and professionals (web text, artist statements, grant proposals, cover letters).

I offer a free 15-minute consultation to prospective coaching clients. Contact me to schedule.

And whether you decide to work with me or not, please don't buy into the idea that in order to succeed you have to work alone, or suffer through. It simply isn't true.  Writing by its very nature is conversation. We often get stuck when we forget this very simple thing.

Before I worked with Aurora, the longest piece I'd written was a 10,000 word story. As I developed my novel draft with her, that number grew to 60,000!  Aurora provides a judgment-free zone. She helped me to avoid letting the initial “cringyness” of my first draft put me off finishing it. I learned the process of outlining and drafting and experimented with different writing and plotting methods.  She helped me to see my characters, and to see when they were acting true to their motivations and when they were not. She gave me the tools and emotional support needed to produce my first novel.  I couldn't have done it without her!

Do you have a draft that you aren't sure where to take next? You know it isn't finished, but you don't know how to start again.  Maybe you feel daunted, afraid of "getting it wrong."  Or maybe you just need inspiration, perspective, a little clarity.

I might ask you difficult questions, but my aim is ultimately to make the writing process easier and more enjoyable, to help you to see your strengths and revise with more energy and inspiration and less of that “nose to the grindstone” quality, less fighting with the text.

I meet with writers once before reading a draft, to get a general sense of where they are in the process and what their struggles are.  After I read the draft, we meet again and talk through my findings and I send you notes from that meeting with recommendations and next steps.  Writers who are interested in continuing can work with me on an as-needed or coaching basis to help them stay motivated.

When I've finally found the time and managed to complete a draft, it rarely resembles anything close to what I hoped for. It is often at this point that I turn to Aurora who has this uncanny ability to quickly sense what I'm trying to do, and of asking exactly the right questions with kindness and compassion.  These are often questions that never have occurred to me, and whose answers only I can come up with, but will inevitably lead me where I need to go next with a project . She's curious and invested – no matter who you are, or how rough you think your work is – and she is so good at helping you reconnect with the joy in the process of making art.

About Me

I am an award-winning author of short stories, essays and poetry.  I’ve been teaching writing for the past 20 years to creatives and professionals, adults and teens both independently and in academic settings. I have an MFA from San Francisco State University and a PhD in literature and creative writing from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where I was a Black Mountain Institute fellow and the editor of Witness Magazine. In addition to advising prospective students, artists and fellowship applicants on their application materials, I have served on committees, reading and reviewing college application essays, fellowship and residency applications. I have also been chosen for several residencies and fellowships as an applicant.

After all of my years in academia, I’ve realized that what I enjoy most – aside from writing – is working directly with writers, helping each writer to get to know and to trust their unique process.

(I’m also a pretty decent bird-watcher and a not so terrible singer. And this might be shocking… I spend a lot of time in bookstores.)
